Florida State Representative
Yancy Miller was raised without a father to take him hunting and fishing. He spent lot of time in the woods with a local neighborhood boy who introduced him into the great outdoors. From that moment on he found himself very drawn to the sport of hunting and fishing.
He joined the Navy at 18 and went into submarine force division where he served six years. While serving in the military he had a car wreck leaving him an incomplete quadriplegic. He said, “I thought my outdoor days were over, but the Lord still blessed me and I was able to live alone without a nursing care giver”. While attending a rehab group he was able to visit with the “Florida Disabled Hunters”. This really perked Yancy’s interest knowing there were other people with disabilities hunting.
Yancy attended a disabled hunt put on by a local club where he learned about the new ideas out there for special people like him. A friend from his church built a gun mount for his chair, and his sister built a strap from a dog leash to fit on the rifle barrel and around his left wrist to hold the rifle tight. Yancy’s trip to a gun smith made the trigger pull easier. Yancy said, “It was all the caring people, great friends, and family’s support that got me back into hunting”.
It wasn’t long and he started taking his 11 yr old nephew hunting with him which really inspired him to getting kids in the outdoors. Yancy said, “I wanted others with disabilities to be able to enjoy the love of outdoors. I want them to know, even though it might take them longer; with a few modifications and some great friends anything is possible”.
Yancy learned about USSA by searching online. He said, “After talking to Brigid I was very impressed and amazed at what’s being done through the charity and how many thousands of lives are touched”. He went on to say, “How often do we say we wish we could do something for someone else? Here’s the place where wishes do come true”!
Galations 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers”.
Mark 9:37 “Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me, and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me”.
Mark 10:12-14 “Some people brought little children to Jesus to have him hold them. But the disciples told the people not to do that. When Jesus saw this, he became irritated. He told them, “Don’t stop the children from coming to me. Children like these are part of the kingdom of God”.
