Joe served in the Army and National Guard for six years. He said, “When I discovered I would go on a pronghorn hunt, I couldn’t believe it. Hunting isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s more of a lifestyle, and to receive a tag from the United Special Sportsman Alliance (USSA) was truly a blessing!”
After receiving a phone call from John Plowman, the USSA New Mexico Representative, Joe texted his buddy Trever to inform him about the upcoming hunt. Trever agreed to attend without hesitation and was ready to hit the field.
They both knew that the pronghorn, native to North America’s western and central regions, could run up to 60 miles per hour, sustaining its speed longer than any other animal. Joe and Trever wondered what a challenge this hunt might be for them.
On the morning of opening day, Joe and Trever “woke up before the birds” and made their three-hour journey to the unit they would be hunting. Joe said, “We arrived before sunrise and spotted a buck moving across the prairie, pushing a herd of five does. As the sun rose, we walked about a half a mile in to set up for a shot.”
“And with luck on our side, a smaller buck was coming towards the bigger buck with his does. He disagreed with it, so he pushed the herd straight towards us. We were lying down in the tall grass, and I could pop out of the grass and make my first shot count with the .300 Win Mag at 250 yards. The rest was history!”
Joe expressed his gratitude for harvesting such a unique animal and was blessed that someone donated their tag to him. This meat will now feed me and my family of four for the year! Thank you so much!”
Congratulations to Joe for his successful hunt! We are grateful for your dedication to serving our country. Thanks to the licensed donor and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. God bless!
