In the enchanting Black River Forest lies Saddle Mound Cranberry Marsh, established by Jay Normington. He purchased the property in 1964 and became a member of Ocean Spray around 1972. The marsh is named after “Saddle Mound,” a prominent feature visible from the area. The land and water have been meticulously managed to support fish and game populations.
Originally, the idea was to invite families with disabled children to spend a day fishing at the family marsh. Over the years, this concept evolved into a larger undertaking called the USSA Summer Fest Event, which incorporates various activities related to natural resources.
The event featured numerous fun-filled and free exhibits and activities for families, including informative cranberry marsh tours, Badgerland Sensory Safari Trailer, 4-H, water sports, swimming, boating, arts and crafts, gold mining, a trading post, and camping. Attendees enjoyed watching goats wander around, along with other wildlife. Fishing was available from both boat and shore, while families also had the chance to participate in target practice and attend a hunter safety refresher course.
For twenty years, the Normington family-owned marsh has transformed into an outdoor paradise for special families, offering incredible experiences that foster cherished memories and connections amidst nature. One can only imagine the joy that Jay Normington, a Purple Heart veteran, and his wife, Norma, an English teacher, feel watching from above as the cranberry marsh continues to be a wonderful playground for many beautiful children.
After the event concluded and the tents and exhibits were dismantled, a lingering sense of something profound remained. As we looked at the numerous footprints imprinted in the sand on the beach and reflected on the peaceful feelings we all enjoyed, it was impossible not to ponder all that had occurred. The event provided a vision of how life should be, demonstrating that anyone’s limitations can be overcome.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors and donors, including Saddle Mound Cranberry Marsh, Random Lake Rod & Gun Club, the Edward A. Kletzien Memorial, Bloomer Lions Club, Patrick’s Memorial Fund, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the City Point Fire Department, JCI, and other local donors. Your support is invaluable and forms the foundation of our event. We truly appreciate your contributions, and it is due to your generosity that we have positively impacted the lives of these wonderful families.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to the dedicated and tireless Summer Fest volunteer staff. Your efforts and commitment were instrumental in the success of this event, and we genuinely appreciate your hard work.
Please save the date for our next event on July 24th and 25th, 2026. God bless!
